Frequently Asked Questions

Editorial Questions and Answers

Q:

How can I improve my search results?

A:

When using the search box that appears on the left-hand side of every page, searching for only one word at a time will speed up the search process. Avoid searching for words that may appear in nearly every article on the site, such as "Georgia." To search for a phrase or more than one word, use the Advanced Search page (accessible by clicking on the words "Advanced Search" below the search box). On the Advanced Search page, two columns of search choices appear.

For example, to search for all mentions of James Oglethorpe on the site, including images of Oglethorpe, go to the Advanced Search page.

Step 1: Choose "Select All" from the column on the left to search all the text on the site. Then, while holding down the "Control" or "Command" key on your keyboard, select all the available categories in the column on the right. This ensures a search of all text and all photographs, video files, and audio files, as well as Quick Facts.

Step 2: Type "james oglethorpe" in the search box. (It is not necessary to use uppercase letters or quotation marks around search terms.)

Step 3: Choose "Exactly Matches the Search Terms" from the search restrictions menu. Then click the "Go" button. You will receive a list of search results. Articles, Quick Facts, images, videos, and audios are distinguished on the search results page by icons.

Q:

How often is the NGE updated?

A:

The NGE is updated weekly. The NGE staff has a process for reviewing changes to the site; therefore, depending on the priority and volume of updates, it may take longer than a week for certain changes to appear.

Q:

How do I cite the NGE?

A:

List the article title, followed by New Georgia Encyclopedia, the date on which you retrieved the article, and the NGE URL.

For example: "Early Victorian Architecture: Overview," New Georgia Encyclopedia. Retrieved January 1, 2004: http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org.

Q:

How can I find out about forthcoming content on the NGE?

A:

Click the Index button on the NGE banner, and then check the index of forthcoming articles, which are listed alphabetically by title. Or, simply open up a subject from the category tree. Forthcoming articles are listed but are not clickable. Once an article has been loaded onto the NGE site, the article title becomes a hotlink.

Q:

How accurate is the information in the NGE? And how do you decide what material to include?

A:

The NGE staff makes every effort to ensure that the content of the NGE is accurate and kept up-to-date. The NGE staff relies on a team of editorial advisors and reviewers, along with copyeditors, fact-checkers, and others to assist with the content. Please read NGE's editorial policy for an explanation of our processes.

Q:

I notice the NGE gives dates for wars. Yet some wars have start and end dates that are subject to interpretation. On what does the NGE base its war dates?

A:

The NGE uses the dates of U.S. involvement in a war or conflict. For example, because the United States entered the World War II conflict in 1941, the NGE uses that year as the start date for a war that began in 1939.

Q:

Why can't I click on and open some articles listed in the subject category trees?

A:

If an article title is not clickable, that means it is a forthcoming article and is not yet available on the site. New content is added regularly, so check back later.

Q:

How can I suggest a topic or offer to write an article?

A:

Click here to submit an article idea.

Q:

How do I notify the NGE about a mistake on the site?

A:

Click here to submit a correction.

Q:

Whom do I contact if I encounter a problem with the site or if I have a question about the site?

A:

Click here to notify us of a technical problem or to submit a question.

Technical Questions and Answers

Q:

I can't view or listen to any of the video or audio clips associated with the articles in NGE. How can I fix this?

A:

If a new window with a description of the clip appears but the video or audio doesn't play, then you may need to install the QuickTime player, which the NGE requires for audio and video clips. For information about downloading QuickTime, see the question below, "Does the New Georgia Encyclopedia require any specific browser or software?"

If you still cannot listen to audio from the NGE after downloading the player, please make sure that your computer's audio is not muted and your computer's speakers are turned on.

If no new window appears when you select a clip, then your browser may be using a pop-up blocking feature to keep websites from creating new browser windows. If you believe this is the case, disable the pop-up blocker while visiting the NGE or set it to block only unrequested pop-up windows. Alternately, your browser may not be JavaScript-enabled. See the question "Does the NGE require JavaScript?" below for more information about NGE's use of JavaScript.

Please note: if you are using a workstation that belongs to your school or library, please consult a librarian, teacher, or technical support person before making any of the changes described above.

Q:

Does the NGE require any specific browser or other software?

A:

The NGE site was developed and tested primarily with Internet Explorer 6. However, the site is intended to be accessible to users of all browsers that support current Web standards, including Gecko-based browsers (Netscape 6.0 and above, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox), Safari, and Opera. Please note that outdated versions of any of these browsers may not support current Web standards and may therefore be incompatible with the NGE site and many other Web sites. Users of proprietary browsers, such as AOL, may also encounter unexpected problems.

The NGE also requires two browser plug-ins for some of its special features: QuickTime, which is required for audio and video clips, and Flash, which is required for the animated introduction. The free QuickTime player is available at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

The free Flash player is available at: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Please note: if you are using a workstation that belongs to your school or library, please consult a librarian, teacher, or technical support person before downloading any software.

Q:

Does the NGE require my browser to accept cookies?

A:

No, your browser does not need to accept cookies in order for you to use the NGE, however, cookies will enhance your experience on the site. If you choose not to accept cookies the animated introduction will appear every time you visit the NGE home page. Also search functions will be limited to one page of results, and you may not have access to some of the site's pop-up multimedia. See your browser's Help menu for information about accepting or blocking cookies.

Q:

Does the NGE require JavaScript? How do I enable JavaScript in my browser?

A:

You can access much of the NGE's content using a browser that is not JavaScript-enabled, but the NGE uses JavaScript to provide special features like audio and video clips, related websites, and printable versions of articles. If you would like to use these features, your browser should be JavaScript-enabled.

To enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer, select "Tools" from the toolbar, then select "Internet Options" from the Tools menu. On the Security tab of the Internet Options panel, a security level of medium or lower will allow Web sites to use JavaScript. If you choose to use a higher security setting, you can enable JavaScript individually while maintaining other high-security options. To do so, click the Custom Level button. The Active Scripting setting in the Scripting section controls Web sites' ability to use the sort of JavaScript that is present on the NGE site.

To enable JavaScript in Netscape 6.0 and above, select "Edit" from the toolbar, then select "Preferences" from the Edit menu. In the Preferences panel, choose "Advanced" from the category list on the left, then choose "Scripts & Plugins" from the list of subcategories. Use the checkbox provided to enable or disable JavaScript.

For other browsers, please see your browser's Help menu for information about JavaScript.
