Because the New Georgia Encyclopedia is an authoritative, educational reference work, our objective is to provide expert coverage of a given subject matter. In every step of the NGE editorial process, professional choices are made and discretion is exercised—identifying the best author for an article; making editorial changes and revisions; selecting the most apt images and multimedia; adding useful internal and external links; and occasionally, deciding that an article is not up to NGE standards for inclusion on the site. NGE articles aim to be free of bias or personal opinion (as opposed to professional judgment); to rely on existing scholarship; and to reflect general conclusions based on the evidence, or the weight of the main lines of scholarship, and evince a balanced approach to the subject. If the article covers a controversial subject where reasoned conclusions are not yet formed in scholarship, that fact is noted. Some subjects are by their very nature controversial, and the NGE staff has deliberated over difficult topics and how best to present them. The staff has consulted the NGE Executive Committee for advice on and oversight of the handling of sensitive material, and in certain cases the staff has also consulted outside reviewers from the wider education community for guidance on how best to handle such material with fairness and respect. Prior to inclusion on the NGE site, all text, multimedia, and special sections are approved by an editorial review process. Every article is reviewed by the Section Editor(s) responsible for that subject area as well as by the NGE Editor and the entire NGE editorial staff. Every article is copyedited, fact-checked, and proofread. The NGE also takes care when linking to external Web sites, choosing only those sites that seem to have added value to an NGE article. Each image, video file, and audio file is reviewed by the NGE staff for quality and for appropriateness for the site, with a balance of historical and contemporary documentation being a goal. The NGE staff has attempted to place visual and audio material in an appropriate context and has aimed to avoid misrepresenting any person, topic, or event. Special sections—Galleries, Features, and Destinations—are also reviewed by NGE staff, and the text within these sections is carefully checked. In the case of the Galleries that are proposed and submitted by museums or other art institutions, those institutions are responsible for the accuracy of the images and text. |
